FINGERSTYLE WORKSHOP - CALENDAR - 2012
Thanks to everyone who put in suggestions, here are the dates for the popular hands-on Fingerstyle workshops.
All these workshops will be presented by Wendy Holman and held on the Sunshine Coast. (Venue to be advised) Cost, $30 unless otherwise stated. Pickers at all levels are welcome.
Sun 29th January 2012 - 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Band in a Box Part 1 - the 7 essentials. Hands on, the main gist.
Band in a Box Part 2 - using BIB to progress your playing.
Sat 11th February - 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Back-up banjo Part 1 - down the neck. Best rolls to use, when and why. Leading from one chord to another. Runs and connections. Common licks when and why.
Sat 10th March - 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Back-up banjo Part 2 - up the neck. Typical moves by Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley and other greats. (Participants need to be able to play an F shape chord.)
Sat 21st April - 11.00am - 4.00pm (includes light lunch; Total $50)
Vocal harmonies - with guests, Cats in Hats. We watch a how to do it video then use these techniques in some favourite jamming songs. Demonstrations by guests, Cats in Hats
Sat 26th May - 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Starting old timey banjo - a hands-on workshop exploring techniques of Mountain and Clawhammer banjo. The differences between the 2 styles.
Sat 23rd June - 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Banjo licks - up and down the neck - what, when and where.
Sat 4th August - 11.00am - 3.30pm (includes light lunch; Total $50)
How to construct a solo. Picking out the melody. Pulling out the melody from the background. For old timey and bluegrass banjo players.
Sat 8th September - 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Band in a Box Part 3 - inputting a chord map, adding an intro, changing the timing of odd measures within the song (ie, 4/4 to 2/4 as in Clinch Mountain Backstep.)
Sat 17th November - 1.00pm - 4.00pm
Playing in keys other than G - a jam session revolving around capos, transposing, and learning how to cope with unfriendly keys. All bluegrass instruments welcome.
